Seismic Workstation
Interpretation for Geologists A "Hands-on" 3-day Course Presented by
Geologists have
been exposed for many years to the tools of the geophysicist and have
developed an understanding of the fundamentals such as the seismic section
display and the synthetic seismogram. Many geologists actively
interpret seismic data and others also seek to enhance their exploration
skill-set by acquiring a basic familiarity with 2D and 3D seismic data. This
can be overwhelming because of the vagaries of acquisition and processing,
coupled with a complex and somewhat intimidating workstation environment. This course was
originally developed at the request of the CSPG to address a perceived
need. It provides a “hands-on” introduction to the workstation world,
tutorial-style, with walk-through explanations and demonstrations of how to
start up, pick and map seismic events, calibrate seismic data with well
control, analyze spectral character, tie seismic lines both spatially and
spectrally and define prospects with actual data sets. The advantages and
limits of workstation interpretation will be discussed along with relevant
aspects of acquisition and processing. The emphasis will be on the effective
integration of geological insight with seismic data. The
workstations used for this course will run the EarthWorks Exploration System. The
intelligently-integrated, real time processing and 3D visualization
capabilities of this workstation allows class participants to immediately see
the results of their efforts while they interpret seismic data. Developments
that make EarthWorks a prestack interpretation workstation enable the course
to introduce advanced topics such as AVO analysis and seismic processing
quality control. As such, geoscientists of any experience level will
benefit from this course. Prior
workstation experience is not a prerequisite. Geologists who have taken
Easton Wren's course "Geophysics for Geologists" will have been
exposed to the conceptual aspects of the course but, again, this is not a
prerequisite as these concepts will be clearly explained using real-time
workstation features.
At course
completion, you will have a good understanding of what constitutes basic
seismic interpretation and how to complete these tasks accurately and
effectively.
