What is EarthWorks?

EarthWorks is the first real-time interpretive processing workstation capable of seismic analysis, spectral analysis and enhancement, synthetics, modeling, gridding, mapping, contouring, visualization and 3D volume picking.

EarthWorks is the only workstation capable of real-time prestack analysis including gather visualization, partial offset and azimuthal stacking, AVO attribute extraction and AVO anomaly visualization.

Why does it look so different compared to other exploration workstations?

EarthWorks is designed and developed by exploration geoscientists, like you. It was developed from scratch with a blue-sky attitude; it was not designed on any existing system.  We wanted to build the ultimate exploration system from the ground up.

What does real-time mean?

Real-time design means EarthWorks animates images in response to user control. This real-time feedback is a much more natural human interface than the batch oriented style of most other workstations. Spectral analysis demonstrates real-time advantages.

What is live-linking?

EarthWorks uses our live-linking technology to have separate applications communicate in real-time with one another. For example, a geoscientist can pick seismic data in the EarthWorks seismic application and instantly, without any user action, a time-depth map on the visualization application will update to reflect the new time picks.

Live-linking is sophisticated software that helps you make better prospects in real-time.

What does intelligently-integrated mean?

Intelligent-integration means tools are instantly accessible and dynamically integrated. For example, synthetics can be generated with a simple click on the well symbol, while interpreting the seismic section. Synthetics can be filtered, stretched, squeezed, modeled and dragged anywhere over the seismic data. Intelligent-integration eliminates the launch application-export file-import file cycle that can eat up so much of your precious time.

Why is prestack analysis important?

Prestack analysis is the hallmark of next-generation interpretive processing systems because it allows geoscientists to significantly reduce drilling seismic artifacts and improve the quality of seismic analysis.

Normally, geoscientists look only at the stacked traces. These traces are averages of 24 to 120 or more individual seismic traces after processing. Once these traces are stacked, or averaged, then you no longer know what the original data looked like. When you see a seismic anomaly, you don’t know if it is the result of true geology or seismic processing artifact.  Every seismic section has seismic artifacts.

By looking at the gather traces, you can tell the difference between what is geology and what is seismic artifact. Knowing this helps prevent you from drilling non-geological related anomalies. Bringing up gathers is extremely easy to do on any section during the normal seismic interpretation workflow.

Prestack data also allows to you detect, analyze and quantify AVO anomalies. Building partial and difference stacks in real-time enables more detailed AVO analyses on every prospect, without the significant per prospect service company charges. Visualize and hunt for AVO anomalies on a regular basis with EarthWorks.

With the true prestack traces available to EarthWorks, you can rebuild the stack to give you one of the best and clearest images of any anomaly.  Focal Stacking allows you to focus the imaging process on a specific zone to improve on the general processing data you normally interpret.

EarthWorks is a real-time Interpretive Processing Workstation that bridges seismic processing with seismic interpretation technology.

Is EarthWorks a seismic interpretation package only or does it have geological tools as well?

EarthWorks is a complete seismic and interpretive processing system. In addition, it is developing into a real-time geological analysis system as well.  Recent developments include real-time sand-shale calibration, mapping and visualization.

This real-time geological tool enables geoscientists to adjust sand-shale cut-off lines, while visualizing well curves in a 3D visualization. During adjustment, sand thicknesses are integrated in real-time and the values are updated at the top of each curve. Additionally, these values are gridded, contoured and this surface is visualized in 3D space. This enables geoscientists to quickly build a realistic sand map in minutes and focus on prospective areas.

Other tools like composite well-seismic traverse displays and real-tine formation top mapping brings us closer to making EarthWorks a completely integrated real-time geological and geophysical exploration workstation.

Is it difficult to learn to use?

Genetek Earth Research has offered a “Hands-on Workstation Course for Geologists” which teaches non-geophysicists how to interpret seismic data on EarthWorks. This course covers both geophysical theory and how to use EarthWorks. It covers everything from picking, mapping, visualization, synthetics calibration, modeling, time-depth conversion, prestack and AVO analysis.

This course has been taught for over 5 years in Calgary with excellent results. There is always two instructors in this 3-day course, which we hope will soon be offered for Houston geoscientists. Please let us know if you are interested in taking such a course.

Is it PC or workstation based?

EarthWorks runs on high-performance 64-bit HP workstations, in order to provide real-time performance. It is one of the only real-time 64-bit native workstation applications in the industry. Most PC applications today are only running on 32-bit platforms.

The 64-bit HP systems used by EarthWorks is the same technology used by some of the fastest supercomputers in the United States in the Department of Defense (Los Alamos). This technology is also used in other research supercomputers, subatomic particle research, banks, telecommunications, stock exchanges, defense systems and hospitals around the world. It is also used in almost every semiconductor manufacturing process control in the world, including Intel’s.

64-bit HP technology that powers EarthWorks is used in mission critical and high performance operations all over the world.

How much is EarthWorks?

EarthWorks ranges in price from entry-level systems to higher-end systems. The cost includes both the 64-bit high-performance workstation as well as the software license for EarthWorks. Please contact us for pricing details.

EarthWorks is not unbundled, which means that every EarthWorks system includes all functionality and complete integration of all components. Additionally, during his introductory period, all clients under maintenance contract receive all new developments built by Genetek Earth Research, without charge.

If you consider the costs of adding up all the software packages needed to match EarthWorks’ functionality, you will see that EarthWorks is extremely well priced and includes a high performance 64-bit workstation, too. One well-integrated system to maintain and learn greatly lowers your maintenance costs.

Who is Genetek Earth Research?

Genetek Earth Research is a small Canadian company that was founded over 20 years ago by exploration geoscientists.  We were frustrated with the software that did not perform in a natural way, and we were irritated by the lack of response to user requests. Software appeared to be developed by programmers that never drilled a well.

So we quit the industry to develop a new advanced system on the most powerful hardware available.  We are completely focused on exploration technology, and have a very long term vision. We are not in this business to simply sell out to our large competitors, like so many others have.

Our mission is to build the best prospect generation system in the world!

Is data loading easy?

Data loading is not difficult. Everything from copying tape files into the system to loading the SEG-Y data is straightforward. Data format documents and animated internet tutorials are available to show you how easy it is to load data. Well location data, well deviations, well curves, map overlays, stack and prestack seismic data can all be loaded.  Technicians or geoscientists can easily learn how to load data in a day or two.

What kind of IT support is required?

EarthWorks is designed to be supported with little or no IT resources. Virtually all interaction occurs between the user and the EarthWorks applications.  New versions of EarthWorks are downloaded and installed from our FTP site with the click on an EarthWorks Install button.

Hardware, system and software support all come from Genetek Earth Research. A single phone call to us can trigger an on-site hardware fix or a software fix from Genetek Earth Research. This keeps things extremely simple for you, outsourcing all of your workstation support

Is EarthWorks a niche product that connects to existing workstations?

EarthWorks is a complete package that can replace many software products you maintain. Individual synthetics, modeling, seismic picking, mapping, visualization, and AVO software products can be eliminated and replaced with a single, intelligently-integrated solution, EarthWorks.

This means you learn only 1 system, support and maintain only 1 system and deal with 1 highly-responsive software vendor. Very simple management solution for a very advanced real-time workstation.

Is EarthWorks still developing?

EarthWorks is constantly evolving. Each time you see EarthWorks, you will see new useful features you haven’t seen before. EarthWorks changes based on user suggestions for new features.

Unlike many other software products, EarthWorks is alive. We develop software for our clients so that it continually approaches your idea of perfection.

How responsive is Genetek Earth Research?

We have developed software for our clients within hours of discussion. Our competition usually takes years to respond, if they respond to your requests at all.

At Genetek Earth Research, we normally develop software within days or weeks of a design session. We can do this because we have authored every line of software and the entire design is based on a single coherent vision.
